Upon happening across an audition notice for an all-female production of a piece based on the women of Shakespeare’s History plays, Andee Kinzy contacted the playwright/producers and queried about a partnership. To our great delight, Nell McKeown and Stephanie Donowho of Untamed Shakespeare agreed to adapt a shorter version for us and to mentor our cast. To tackle this challenging script, we sought the directing talents of the incredible Lindsay Doleshal of En Route Productions. How lucky we were that PBS was making an Arts in Context episode about Lindsay this semester, as our performance appeared in the piece alongside her other endeavors. Eight girls joined us for this project where they interacted with professional performers who were working on the same script. It was a fabulous and unique experience and culminated in performances at Austin Scottish Rite Theater, the performance space at Casa de Luz and a performance at Texas Nonprofit Theatre’s Youth Conference (don’t forget the moments in PBS’ Arts in Context). We were also privileged to develop a relationship with The Back Pack Co-Lab, a multi-use creation space and a troupe that performs amazing non-spoken sketch comedy shows.
